French roulette is not originally the first variant of this game of chance, but if one speaks generally of roulette, most gamblers first remember this variant of the game. The reason for this is the great popularity of the game, because in contrast to the American version, double zero is dispensed with and the expectation of winnings is significantly improved. On this page I would like to go into the peculiarities of the French game and how it differs from other variants.

Differences to other variants

French roulette differs from European only in the French-language name on the tableau. The dealer’s announcements are also usually made in this language. Then you hear the famous “rien ne va plus” instead of “nothing works”. The announcement of the bets is “faites votre jeux” which means “make your game”. The winning numbers are also announced in French “vingte et un, rouge” instead of “21, red). The La Partage rule, on the other hand, is not a distinguishing feature.

The names of the bets or croupiers are also different. There is a “Chef de Table” who oversees the game table and heads his team (“Equipe”). The croupiers also take over the bets from announcement games. The “advertisement” is then, for example, “Voisins du Zero”, which means all numbers adjacent to zero: in the cylinder (wheel) between 25 and 22. The cylinder is in the so-called cuvette (boiler)

The bets are placed on the simple chances of Rouge / Noir, Impair / Pair and Manque / Passe or on the multiple chances Plein, Cheval, Transversale Plein, Les trois Premiers, Carre, Les quatre Premiers, Transversale simple, Douzaines or Colonnes. Other names for the announcement games are Voisins (neighbors), the boiler games Orphelins, Jeu Zero, or Tiers du Cylindre. These can usually be set directly on the so-called Racetrack, alternatively there is also the option to select them online in an additional menu.

There are a few more names like the Tronc (sacrificial stick / tip), with the Rateau (rake) the lost bets are collected or the green cloth of the tableau is called Tapis.

Stakes, payouts, expected profit

Since the possible uses, the payouts and the overall expectation of winnings are identical to European Roulette, I will not deal with them again here.

The two variants of La Partage

I have already mentioned that the La Partage rule is not a specific rule for French roulette. Since one could assume the French origin with this word, I would nevertheless like to introduce it here.

Each casino can individually determine whether this rule applies to each individual table, and there are two ways of interpreting this rule. In principle, this rule only affects the bets on simple chances if the zero is determined as the winning number. Without La Partage, all bets are lost. With the simple application, however, the players get half their bet back, which slightly increases the expectation of winning. In the original and somewhat more complicated application of this rule, after asking “partagez la masse, s’il vous plaît”, you can decide to take out half of the stake, the rest is lost – if not, all stakes are at a simple chance at first blocked. They say “En Prison” (they go to prison). What happens to these tokens will not be decided until the next coup. This is the only situation where bets are officially left at the table after a coup. If you still want to win your bet, you must first unlock the bet. This is done by winning the bet on the blocked chips. The free bets must still remain on the table for another round and you have to win your bet again to get your full payout. If you lose one of the two bets, the stake is finally lost. to get his full payout. If you lose one of the two bets, the stake is finally lost. to get his full payout. If you lose one of the two bets, the stake is finally lost.

It becomes even more complicated when zero is determined again as the winning number in the event of a blocked bet. This can also be handled differently from casino to casino. In some casinos the stake is simply lost, in others it is blocked twice and has to be unlocked twice.

In online casinos, however, usually only the simple La Partage rule is used, in which you automatically lose half of your bet and get the other half back. One last word about the expectation of winning roulette with La Partage. You usually read that the house edge of the game is reduced from 2.7% to 1.35% – but that’s only half the truth. In this case, only the house edge is reduced to simple chances, all multiple chances have the usual house edge of 2.7% because this rule is not used here. The CasinoClub is best suited to play with a better house edge . Here you will find a total of three games in which this rule is used.
